Teen & Adolescent Care
Many of our patients ask us when they need to address their daughter's gynecological health issues. When does she need to come in? When does she need her first Pap smear or exam? Adolescent girls are confronted with numerous issues and the decisions they make can have serious consequences for their health, well-being, and future. We want to join you in starting off on the right pathway.
There are three things that you need to do:
Get informed. Ask us for handouts and materials that deal with teen issues and topics you can discuss with your daughter. These include menstruation (what to expect, menstrual cramps, irregularity, tampon use, hygiene, etc), promoting abstinence, contraception, healthy diet and exercise.
Talk with your daughter . Many health topics warrant open discussion. Although it may be awkward to discuss sex, it is important to talk to your daughter about it. The same regarding alcohol and smoking. We can work together with you and your daughter to fill in any gaps.
Be sure your daughter is seeing a health care practitioner. We can help in discussions of topics such as pregnancy prevention, preventing Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), HPV vaccinations and other gynecological issues. We all want to give her the knowledge and skills she needs to make the right lifestyle and behavioral decisions.
Most girls are reluctant to visit a gynecologist because they do not want a pelvic examination. In almost all cases, an examination is not needed for teens . In addition they will be able to discuss issues and concerns in a private and confidential setting.
If you have an adolescent girl in the family, then ask us about the following topics :
Puberty and menstrual periods.
Pregnancy prevention.
Prevention of STD's.
Date rape prevention
HPV or other immunizations.
Anything else of concern.
Together we can work to keep your daughter healthy and safe.
